Before you guys listen, I'd like to ask a favor. We would really like to hear some feedback. Since we plan to polish up these songs and record many of them in the near future, it would be really nice to hear what people think of them. I was at a bridal shower this weekend taking photos and someone asked, "Is that the camera you are using for Tuesday Tunes?" and I was like, "WHAT? You listen to those?" and all the girls said they do. But pretty much only my mom and sister ever comment (and sometimes Matt or Shana), so although we can tell we are getting hits from different IP addresses, we aren't savvy enough to know who is listening. But we'd like to! We accept critiques as well, so if you don't have something positive to say, let it fly (gently, of course). We're not sensitive. And honestly, any feedback is better than no feedback. Your feedback on this song and past Tuesday Tunes will help us decide which ones to record (so feel free to give the old ones a listen and let us know which ones you like and which ones are best left to the ol' blog).
If you take three minutes to listen, please take an extra thirty seconds to comment. We would love to hear feedback particularly in regards to the song-writing, since Lil' Dave is putting a lot of time and energy into these.
You'll notice that this week's tune has a guest appearance towards the end. That's what happens when Papa is working and can't watch the little guy.
Steam trains and elephant games
Little girls with fake diamond rings
Are better than those girls with fake smiles
All around this round about
We were kids, we were finding out
I like blue, you like the fall
Let’s be friends
I’ve been waiting tables
Waiting for you to come back home
I was afraid of fables
I was afraid you would leave me all alone
Raining cats and dogs in the park
You and I snuck out in the dark
You held my hand and heart for a while
Fill me in and fill me out
Back porch rain coming down
Hit the roof so hard beat like a drum
I’ve been waiting tables
Waiting for you to come back home
I was afraid of fables
I was afraid you would leave me all alone
Find me out by the river
Waiting for you come back
I’ve been out since September
Waiting for the sun to turn black
I'm really not much help as far as opinions go right now but first, as always I loved this song. Second, this probably is just normal with the way you are recording it but I can especially tell with today's song as David sings more.....but it is hard sometimes to hear Rachel's actual words. Not sure if that makes sense. It's like I'd love to sing along but I can't always decipher exactly what you are saying but I could hear David better. Irregardless, beautiful as always. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI am bad at this sorta thing but I will tell you what my impressions are.
ReplyDeleteVideo quality is good enough but the sound is tough. I have trouble distinguishing disparate sounds so it may just be me (if sound isn't good quality i have troubles). A couple bucks spent for better sound recording would be nice but I don't know anything about those things.
I like Rachel's voice - reminds me of Patty Griffin in a way. I also thought of Iron and Wine (but not in a whispery way) Maybe it is David's beard . . .
Most of the songs have been Rachel singing so I haven't paid much attention to David's voice. In this one I preferred when you sang together as opposed to when David was singing solo but that is probably due to sound quality and my hearing abilities.
This song would be great road-trip music.
I liked the *rest* about 2/3 of the way through - well placed and nice.
You should have Bennett at every concert and he should be allowed to interrupt whenever he feels like it (I can see you on stage singing while changing a diaper) ;-)
love it! as always...especially when you guys harmonize, your voices blend well and harmonies done well are one of my favorite things. keep at it :).
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time, you guys!
ReplyDeleteShana, I know exactly what you are saying. This cheap camera has a sound equalizer thing that is supposed to keep music from being too loud and it also sort of smooshes all the noises together. Basically, it does the exact opposite of what you would want in an audio recorder, but that's what we have to work with for now. You're right though. My voice is harder to hear and my dictation is poor, partly because I am not super familiar with the words, so I mumble. :) When we do a real recording, you will be able to hear the words, and we'll include lyrics too, most likely.
Matt, you nailed it. Thanks for all the feedback! Send me some dollars and we'll get new sound gear... I can't wait! (Kidding... but new sound gear IS on the list for WAY down the road). David's strongest suit is writing the songs and mine is singing and when we do stuff all together (like with my sister) her and I do the majority of the singing, which is super fun because our voices can be identical at times. For now, David is just being a trooper and singing along, even though we often have to sing way out of his range to make it work for mine. What you were hearing was right-on. We weren't singing in his best range (or mine, really). We'll take the Bennett suggestion into consideration. So far, he has made a vocal appearance in nearly every tune, despite our best efforts. :)
EJ - thanks! You're just saying that because you love me, but I'll take it.
I, too, love the sound of your voices together. Separately also but especially harmonizing. Like has been said, I have trouble understanding the words so I'd love it if each tune would include a post of the lyrics. It seems like they all have catchy tunes and great stories or messages but I feel like I'm missing out on a major part of it when I can't figure out all the words. I love that you're doing this and that you've kept it up each week.
ReplyDeleteI liked B's little guest appearance too ☺
Thanks, mom. I'll ask Dave what he thinks about adding the lyrics. We've been hesitant because they aren't set in stone yet, but I suppose it WOULD be nice if people knew what we were singing about. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Rach! I just got caught up on my Tuesday Tunes :-) Since you are asking for feed back, I thought I would let you know that I really love Burn It Down! The only thing that I thought of was an even bigger build on the bridge (I am guessing) where you would maybe be almost to the point of yelling for a few times of BURN IT DOWN BURN IT DOWN.....(hard to tell with no mics, you could've already been doing that!) not sure if I am explaining it right but just thought I would share what I was thinking while enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteMiss you!
Love Listening to you guys!
Hi Rachel and Dave!
ReplyDeleteMy feed back may not be quite as useful, because I am not so musically inclined. I love the tuesday tunes. All three of us sit down to enjoy them. I do not feel like i can critique your music, because what you have here is far better than anything I have or could ever produce. But since you asked for any feedback, here you are...... I feel like this tune is a bit redundant in the lyrics.... waiting tables. waiting on you.... that part is fine, but it feels the chorus goes on and on. Maybe adding another verse or line in there would balance it out. However; super chill might be what you are going for, and then in that case, just leave it.
Nic and I both agree that last week's tune was fantastic. You should record that one for sure! Good job David, the lyrics are great.
My only request is that you post the full lyrics to each song, because it is sometimes hard to hear the words. love you guys, sounds great, Autumn
I liked this song. My comment will sound like a broken record, but I too would like to see the lyrics. It may help us hear you better if we know what you are saying. Especially since you are stuck with this recording equipment for now. I have been really enjoying the songs that Dave has recently written and like hearing him sing. It's nice to have a song out a many where you shake it up a bit.
ReplyDeleteAlso, my favorite songs so far have been Gone Too Long, When Darkness Falls, and Fighting Utah. You should records those 3 for sure.
ReplyDeleteDavid and Rachel, Great Job! I've only listened to a couple Tuesday tunes, but those have been great! I would agree with the consensus that lyrics posted would be helpful, as it is hard to understand the words at times. Your harmony is great! My voice teacher in college said siblings that sing together can't be beat for their blending...i.e. The Carpenters. You all have that! Keep them coming...Julie
ReplyDeleteAutumn, I'm just glad you could make out those lyrics. Woot! Thanks for the feedback. I must say, it is the BEST visual ever to think of little Vera sitting at a computer, watching a video. ha!
ReplyDeleteLindsay, thank you! Those are our favorites too. I think I love Fighting Utah and Burn it Down best...it's a close tie. Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. xo
Julie - you are the straw that broke the camel's back... we will start including some lyrics. And thank you for the compliment. We will keep them coming, crappy quality camera and all!
Great song. Being able to see the words really helps. Harmonies are very fine. Record it!! We'll be rich!
